Daniel Kimmel, MD, PhD is a postdoctoral researcher and attending psychiatrist at Columbia University. He completed his undergraduate training at Oberlin College, where he double-majored in biology and neurobiology, while studying jazz guitar and flute. After two years as a computer developer in San Francisco, he continued his training in the MD/PhD program at Stanford University with Bill Newsome, where he recorded from single neurons in awake behaving monkeys to understand how prefrontal cortex represents and routes information about economic value to make decisions. At Columbia, Dr. Kimmel developed new statistical tools for examining high-dimensional neural data with John Cuningham, while pivoting from animal work to study in humans the roles of inference and generalization in decision-making with Daphna Shohamy. He aims to link the research to his interests in affective state and mood disorders. Outside of research, Dr. Kimmel maintains a part-time private practice in New York.
