Synagogue Restoration in Italy

Jewish Communities of Venice and Siena
Italy

Beginning in 2020, the Foundation supported the Jewish Community of Venice‘s complete restoration of the Ghetto Nuovo. The project includes restoring the three most important surviving Renaissance synagogues in the world – the Schola Tedesca, Schola Canton, and Schola Italiana – as much as possible to their former glory, and modernizing the Jewish Museum and exhibition pathways to provide visitors a more profound experience of daily life in the Ghetto in the 1500s. The synagogue and museum complex also includes an area for active cultural use by the Jewish community which calls it home.

The Foundation has also supported the restoration of the 18th-century neoclassical synagogue in Siena, damaged by earthquake in 2023 and home to the Jewish Community of Siena.
