By supporting the critical postdoctoral period, when a scientist has advanced knowledge and the freedom to innovate, the Leon Levy Scholars in Neuroscience program helps forge lifelong careers in creative science, working towards understanding the brain in both health and disease, to the benefit of all of humanity.

The Leon Levy Scholarships in Neuroscience promote groundbreaking neuroscience research in the five boroughs of New York City. Inspired by Leon Levy’s fascination with the brain and his affinity for investing in high-potential individuals, the Scholarships support the most innovative young researchers at a critical stage of their careers—their postdoctoral research—as they develop the new ideas and directions that will help establish them as independent neuroscientists.

The New York Academy of Sciences independently administers the Leon Levy Scholarships, which are awarded competitively on an annual basis and provide 36 months of support as well as structured mentoring and career development programming. Postdocs across the five boroughs are eligible to apply.

Established in 2022, the Scholarships centralize and expand the Foundation’s long-standing support for exceptional early-career researchers. From 2009-2022, the Foundation supported promising neuroscientists through the Leon Levy Fellowships in Neuroscience administered by Columbia University Irving Medical Center, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, NYU Langone Health, The Rockefeller University, and Weill Cornell Medicine.
